AP reported that a northern Indiana steel mill is getting a USD 32 million federal grant to install equipment that will generate power from a blast furnace's waste gas.

ArcelorMittal will use the Department of Energy grant to install a new energy efficient boiler at its Indiana Harbour East mill in East Chicago. The boiler will produce electricity and steam on site by capturing gas generated by iron-making operations.

The company says the boiler is expected to help lower energy costs and per ton production costs by using about 46 billion cubic feet of gas that's flared annually.

ArcelorMittal's USD 32 million grant was the only project funded in Indiana among more than USD 155 million in projects announced by the Energy Department. The agency granted money to 41 projects around the country using stimulus funds.
