The Express Times reported that 100 years ago in 1912 “To meet the demands of its customers and to cope with keen competition from other iron and steel manufacturers the Bethlehem Steel Company has awarded the contract for a new USD 2,000,000 blast furnace to be completed and ready for operation on June 1st 1913. The contract was awarded to the Pennsylvania Engineering Company, New Castle. The new furnace will be of the latest designs in blast furnace perfection. It will be built on the site of the old blast furnace A, which was razed recently and will be similar to the four large furnaces erected during the last five years."
