Corus has announced that 300 jobs in Workington are safe. It confirmed its Corus Process Engineering operation would continue in the town after an 8 month review.
It may be noted that Corus announced in January 2009 that its west Cumbrian operation was being reviewed as part of a cull of 2,500 jobs across its UK sites. There were fears for the facility's 300 workers, just three years after Corus ceased steel production in Workington after more than a century.
But the firm has given the site the green light to continue and challenged workers to win expand the business.
Corus stopped steel production at its Moss Bay rail rolling mill in 2006 when the operation was switched to Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. The move cost 244 jobs and brought to an end 129 years of steel production in the town.
