
Pittsburgh Business Times reported that ArcelorMittal has informed the state of Pennsylvania that it will substantially reduce the work force at its Monessen plant.
According to a letter from plant manager Mr Robert Ross to the state Department of Labor and Industry the layoffs, which are expected to affect 116 employees, will take effect beginning July 5th 2009.
According to Ross' letter the layoffs are expected to be temporary, but for an uncertain period of time,
The workers to be laid off are part of United Steelworkers Local 4303, which represents 167 workers at the plant. Union members agreed to a new three-year contract last year.
ArcelorMittal bought the Monessen coke plant from Koppers Holdings Inc. in 2008, for USD 160 million.
