Gazette Live reported that closure of Redcar's steel plant would create a social and economic crisis in Redcar and Cleveland.
As per report, Redcar and Cleveland Council's Cabinet has backed a series of measures which aim to either keep the plant open or to diversify the borough’s economy, help people facing redundancy, and speed up other major projects in the pipeline.
Mr Ian Wardle, the council's director of regeneration services, said that "The effect of the Corus closure creates a social and economic crisis for Redcar and Cleveland on a similar scale to the closure of the UK’s coalfields 20 years ago."
Mr Wardle detailed measures which the council and members of the multi agency task force were supporting to tackle the situation. They included:
The top priority was to maintain steel making in Redcar to provide employment for the workforce and ensure spending remains in the local economy. It supported the idea of a 12 month wage subsidy
Assistance being provided to help speed up the diversification of jobs in the borough
