It is reported that thousands of under threat steel workers have been told their jobs are safe for another two months.
As per report, a 90 day consultation with workers at Corus Teesside Cast Products plant in Redcar had been due to finish on August 7th 2009. But the company confirmed that having secured orders to the end of September the consultation exercise would be extended until then.
A spokesman said that "This gives the company more time to find a long term solution for TCP and has led to the consultation process being extended until the end of September."
The plant provides employment for 2,000 staff and 1,000 contractors. It came under threat in May when an international steel consortium, consisting of Marcegaglia, Dongkuk, Duferco and Ternium Procurement, pulled out of an off take agreement, signed in 2004, to take 78% of the output from the Redcar plant for ten years.
In the meantime Corus bosses are still working to find a buyer for the plant.
The spokesman added that "If a long term solution for TCP can not be found, the probable outcome continues to be mothballing."
