The Scunthorpe Telegraph reported that Corus steel workers in Scunthorpe are to receive bumper bonus payments this month, after lawyers for the union launched a case at an employment tribunal, arguing that Corus had breached a long standing site agreement by withholding the quarterly payments.
The union, Community, withdrew its legal challenge when negotiators reached an agreement with Corus that it would pay the outstanding bonus, covering October to December 2009.

The company also agreed to pay the fourth and final bonus, for 2009-10, enshrined in a site deal going back to the early 1980s.

Scunthorpe MP Mr Elliot Morley said "This is very good news for the 4,000 Corus employees. I always thought Corus was in breach of long-standing agreement but it is clearly better to settle this issue by negotiation rather than long and complex court cases."

The union warned that it would take further action unless an agreement is reached concerning the bonus from April 2010.
