It is reported that about 110 of the 165 employees, including management, were laid off at Gerdau Ameristeel mill in Perth Amboy and some maintenance workers and management will remain until October 31st 2009.

Mr Santiago Fittipaldi spokesman for Gerdau Ameristeel said that the mill was not shut down on September 11th 2009.

He added that "The company is currently in the middle of conducting an orderly shutdown of the Perth Amboy facility, but no date has yet been set as to when that process will be completed. While September 11th 2009 is the last day of work for some workers at the mill, others will remain until the shutdown. As this is an orderly shutdown, there are workers who will cease working at different times throughout the process."

In June 2009, Gerdau Ameristeel announced the Perth Amboy mill was being closed and production at the Sayreville steel mill suspended due to reduced demand for steel products. The Perth Amboy plant on Elm Street, the former Co Steel Raritan mill, has been owned by Gerdau Ameristeel since 2002.
