cleveland.com citing a union official reported that United States Steel Corp has begun recalling laid off workers at its factory in Lorain. As per report, more than 400 were put out of work when the factory halted production last year.
Mr Dan Voorhees VP of the United Steelworkers Local 1104 in Lorain, said that he thinks the tariffs on Chinese OCTG imports along with improved economic conditions, have helped bring work back to the plant in recent months.
He said US Steel called most workers back in January, and the union has been told the rest will return by the end of this month.
Mr Voorhees said that about 500 union members laid off from Republic Engineered Products next door are waiting to find out whether they'll get their jobs back. He told that “Since the order books picked back up at US Steel, the company has not, to my knowledge, contacted Republic for any rounds of supply. The company appears to be shipping in raw steel from another source. Union is hoping that changes.”
