It is reported that thousands of people took to the streets in Belgium on October 26th 2011 to protest against plant closures planned by ArcelorMittal.
Trade unionists said that at least 10,000 people were demonstrating in Seraing, a small town on the outskirts of Liege, where there are three steelworks at risk. The protests were taking place on the day European Union leaders were meeting in Brussels for a summit on the eurozone's debt crisis.
In a statement, the European Trade Union Confederation called on the political leaders to focus on job losses as well, highlighting the plight of workers in Romania facing the closure of a Nokia factory.
Mr Judith Kirton Darling chief of ETUC said that "The ETUC stands together with the workers in Seraing and across Europe, calling for investment in people and innovation through concrete EU industrial policies and against the siphoning off of profits and deindustrialization."
