It is reported that as the steel deal celebrations calm down and the hard work begins at the Redcar site, experts who helped draw up the contracts have been talking about their role.
Experts from DLA Piper's Sheffield office provided specialist real estate and safety, health and environmental advice on the sale of the Corus Teesside Cast Products site.
DLA Piper represented TATA Steel on the GBP 291 million deal. Mr Neil Slater, partner in DLA Piper's real estate team said that "Our Sheffield office has a particular affiliation with the steel industry so the resumption of steelmaking to this historic site makes it all the more rewarding."
The site comprised in excess of 2,000 acres of part freehold, part leasehold land and approximately a third of this has been transferred to SSI. Working closely with third parties including Crown, Network Rail and PD Teesport, DLA Piper's team advised on the transfer of freeholds and the grant of long and short term leases and ownership of the gas, electricity and water services.
In particular there were a number of complex arrangements put in place to deal with environmental liabilities and operational continuity. The team had to provide solutions to complex land, permit and compliance issues.
The assets included in the sale include the Redcar blast furnace, the Redcar and South Bank coke ovens and Teesside Cast Product's power generation facilities in addition to the Lackenby steelmaking and casting facilities.
A major marketing campaign, encouraging people to contact the authority's Routes to Employment team for expert guidance, has been launched by Redcar & Cleveland Council. The service can offer support to residents wanting to brush up on their CVs, improve their letter writing skills and interview techniques. A range of vocational training is also available.
Mr Cllr Mark Hannon, the council's cabinet member for economic development, said that "The ongoing regeneration of the borough is leading to a raft of employment opportunities being made available and we are extremely keen to ensure that local jobseekers are well prepared to take them."
