Voxy News reported that local engineering business HT Engineering has made the finals of the Swedish Steel Prize, which is a keenly contested international prize aimed to serve as an inspiration for engineers globally.

This annual award can be won by anyone who has developed a product that includes advanced high strength steels or a method that expands the field of application for these steels. The award intends to showcase the possibilities with the use of specialist steel products.

HT Engineer0ing's nomination was for the design and construction of an innovative Operator Protection System for excavator Cabs or as they refer to it Optiview as it optimizes in weight reduction and operator vision.

Mr Beau Davidson MD of HT Engineering said "The cab of an excavator is often used in high risk environments that require operator protection against objects that can enter the cab causing injury to the operator. By utilizing Advanced High Strength Steel in a new design HT Engineering has been able to improve both the operator's protection, field of vision, and safety with a considerably lighter guard that can better withstand impact shock."

Mr Beau said that "To be the first New Zealand company to gain entry acceptance to the award and then be nominated one of the final 4 in this prestigious international award is recognition of our innovative approach to quality engineering solutions, design and workmanship. This has the potential to attract further engineering opportunities to our region where we have a base of very good engineering businesses. We are delighted with our teams success and look forward to traveling to Sweden next month to attend the Awards Ceremony, our goal is to bring home the prize."

The Swedish Steel Prize was awarded for the first time in 1999 and is the world's most prestigious international steel award an Oscar award in the steel industry.
