Indonesian scrap imports up by 27pct YoY in 7M 2011

According to Indonesian trade statistics made available in Tokyo, Indonesia's ferrous scrap imports totaled 1,256,000 tonnes in January to July 2011 period, up by 27.7% YoY, averaging 179,000 tonnes per month, when the cumulative imports translated into an annualized 2,150,000 tonnes.

In the breakdown by main sources, the UK ranked first at 210,000 tonnes or 16.8% of the total, up by 130.9% YoY; South Africa second at 171,000 tonnes or 13.6%, up by 188.8% YoY; the USA third at 163,000 tonnes or 13.0%, down by 26.3% YoY and Singapore fourth at 89,000 tonnes or 7.1%, down by 14.6% YoY. As a result, the four nations together accounted for 50.5% of the total.

In July 2011, Indonesia's ferrous scrap imports totaled 252,000 tonnes, up by 43.0% YoY, indicating the highest level so far since the beginning of 2011.

Of the total, the UK supplied the largest quantity of 64,000 tonnes, up by 734.6% YoY; Australia the second largest of 34,000 tonnes, up by 444.8% YoY; South Africa the third largest of 23,000 tonnes, down by 4.4% YoY and the USA the fourth largest of 21,000 tonnes, down by 70.0% YoY.
