Japan steel scrap exports in September up by 40pct YoY

According to statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Finance, the country's ferrous scrap exports totaled 656,560 tonnes in September 2009, up 40.05% YoY, but down by 10.08% MoM.

In September 2009, Japan's principal ferrous scrap export markets did not change, with 340,785 tonnes of scrap exports going to South Korea, up by 1.88% MoM and up by 31.63% YoY and 303,690 tonnes going to China, down by 13.44% MoM, but up by 59.61% YoY.

Ferrous scrap exports to South Korea accounted for 52% of Japan's total ferrous scrap exports, while exports to China constituted 46% of the total figure.

On the other hand, in the January to September 2009 period, Japan exported 7.79 million tonnes of ferrous scrap, up by 79.57% YoY. In the period in question, China increased its ferrous scrap imports from Japan by 132.98% YoY to 4.25 million tonnes, while South Korea imported 3.01 million tonnes, up by 37.59% YoY.
