The second largest coal producer Kennecott Energy Company in the Powder River Basin is changing its name as Rio Tinto Energy America. The change came about because the company wanted to match the name of its parent company, the Rio Tinto Group.

Kennecott operates Wyoming mines, Colowyo mine in Colorado and is a partner in the Decker mine in Montana.
