It is reported that Latvian rebar producer Liepajas Metalurgs has completed the refurbishment of its melt shop on schedule in early December 2011.

The revamped complex will increase the company’s production capacity by 80% and also lower production costs, according to a report from Steel Business Briefing.

The modernized melt shop, featuring a new 1.3 million tonnes per annum electric arc furnace, a scrap pre heating system and a 100 tonne ladle furnace, was started up on December 6th 2011; the EAF has been operating since August.

The investment program also included a water treatment plant, a de dusting plant and a 110 kW substation. The EAF can process 80,000 tonnes of scrap per month. The company has invested in scrap handling equipment, including six new bridge cranes to load scrap into buckets. It has also built roads to accommodate specialized scrap transporters.
