Malaysian scrap imports dropped by 30pct YoY in September

According to data, Malaysia imported around 80,000 tonnes of scrap in September 2011, slumping by 30.5% YoY and dropping by 51.1% MoM, the lowest level since February 2011.

Among them, 32,000 tonnes were from South Africa, down by 4.6% YoY; 13,000 tonnes were from Australia, dipping by 55.8% YoY and 12,000 tonnes were from Singapore, surging by 54.3% YoY.

In addition, the country's scrap imports in the first nine months of 2010 totaled 1.465 million tonnes, decreasing by 19.5% YoY.

In the January to September 2011 period, Malaysia's scrap imports from the US totaled 564,000 tonnes, soaring by 8.69% YoY; that from South Africa was 285,000 tonnes, surging by 41% YoY; that from Singapore was 187,000 tonnes, increasing by 35.3% YoY; that from the UK was 88,000 tonnes, dipping by 61.5% YoY and that from Australia was 78,000 tonnes, declining by 72.5% YoY.
