BNAmericas reported that the Mexican government has asked the World Trade Organization to investigate the benefits that the Chinese government is providing to its steel companies.
Mr Rafael Rubio president of Mexican steel chamber Canacero’s foreign trade committee told BNamericas that “The Mexican steel industry has expressed its concern about the issue and we have handed over information about how the Chinese are controlling and protecting their trade, which is why the government decided to go to the WTO.”
According to Mr Rubio, the investigation is already moving along and the Mexican steel sector hopes that other governments in the region will join the cause.
He said that “We want the WTO to decide if China is or is not altering market rules.”
Recently the international trade group of the Latin American Iron and Steel Institute Ilafa held meetings with officials from various governments in the region to discuss how to deal with the problems that China has created for the steel sector.
Steelmakers located in Mexico include AHMSA, ArcelorMittal and Ternium.
