Nippon Steel Corporation announced that it has accepted orders for its specially developed "ECOKOTE-S™" for fuel tanks to be manufactured by Spectra Premium Industries Inc, from Canada, for Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range.

"ECOKOTE-S™" is a tin zinc coated steel sheet for automotive fuel tanks that contains no lead or other environment loading substances, exhibits high corrosion resistance, which are advantages desired by today's customers.

Nippon Steel said that "Through technical exchange with Spectra, a fuel tank manufacturer, we have been endeavoring to achieve corrosion resistance, formability, and environmental performance most appropriate for environmentally safe vehicles. As a consequence, "ECOKOTE-S™" became an officially approved material for Volt's fuel tank."

It added that "We view this adoption of "ECOKOTE-S™" for the Volt, as an important success for Nippon Steel, and we will continue working on the development and spread of environmentally friendly and advanced products, such as ECOKOTE-S™."
