OneSteel has posted a first half loss as it tries to reposition itself as a diversified mining business.

The AUD 74 million loss recorded in the six months to the end of December represents a 163% profit slide on the same period last financial year.

The steelmaker said the result was due to multi million dollar costs associated with discontinuing businesses and the cost of purchasing mining assets.
