
POSTECH held an unveiling ceremony of founding chairman Mr Tae joon TJ Park's statue on December 2nd 2011 at the school's main auditorium in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of POSTECH, reflecting on the founding principles once again.
National Assembly member Mr Byeong seok Lee, Pohang si mayor Mr Seung ho Park, chairman Mr Joon yang Chung, POSTECH chancellor Mr Yong min Kim and 1,000 participants attended the school's founding commemorative ceremony, where commemorative and congratulatory speeches, as well as presentations of honorary doctorate degrees and appreciation plagues to those of merit took place.
After the ceremony, founding chairman Mr Tae joon Park's statue was unveiled to the public at the Nobel Hill. 800 POSTECH members, POSCO employees and retirees and citizens attended the event.
This statue was created to commend founding director Mr Tae joon Park's strong will and achievements in establishing POSTECH and fostering future talent. Approximately 20,000 members of POSTECH, Pohang citizens, and Pohang Steelworks employees gathered funds for its creation.
The statue made by Mr Wu Wei shan president of the Chinese Academy of Sculpture, features the coat and fedora worn often by TJ Park and a phrase at the base noted Steel Giant and Great Man of Steel and Education Man Doctor TJaejoon Park.
At the ceremony, chancellor Mr Yong min Kim said that "The success of POSTECH in the past 25 years could only be possible with the support of not only its members, but also because of the support from the local society and country. POSTECH will continue its efforts to answer the support and encouragement and not merely rest on its past results."
Chairman Mr Joon yang Chung said and emphasized that "Times were difficult for POSCO when the school construction started in 1985, but founding chairman Mr Tae joon Park's educational patriotism allowed for the establishment of POSTECH. In the 25 years to come, the school must create great research results as a leaders in the science and engineering fields, and furthermore contribute to the development of the country and humanity."
Meanwhile, POSCTECH ranked 1st in Asia in the world's university evaluation in citations per faculty in the Times Higher Education magazine's World University Rankingson dissertation impact factor by UK's The Times, once again confirming the school's leading status among Asia's science and engineering universities. Also, the school has built the country's only Pohang Light Source with its own technology, expanding its research capabilities and adhering to the principle of maintaining a small core group of students, leading the establishment of an advanced education environment.
