Pakistan’s National Assembly will finally discuss the privatization of Pakistan Steel Mills in today’s session after its speaker had turned down several adjournment motions filed by the opposition members. The opposition has asked for a debate in the assembly on PSM’s privatization and has alleged that the PSM was privatized at throwaway prices causing losses worth billions of rupees to the national exchequer.
Dr Sher Afgan Niazi, the minister for parliamentary affairs, did not oppose the motion presented by Mr Syed Naveed Qamar of the PPP-P and said that the motion should be taken under rule 241 for a debate on the issue so that the treasury members could also participate in the debate.
The opposition claims that the mill was worth almost twice the amount for which it has been sold.
