PSMC Privatization – Legal battle starts

Pakistan’s Supreme Court Bench continued it’s hearing of reference against the privatization of Pakistan Steel Mill on Tuesday where Barrister Zafar Ullah of Watan Party carried on his arguments against the case, for four hours before the court adjourned further hearings for Wednesday.

Barrister Zafar Ullah said that Pakistan Steel mill is a mega asset of Pakistan and selling it for peanuts is sheer crime. The government of Russia spent an enormous 80 million rubles on its establishment. He said that due to wrong policies of Pakistani government, every Pakistani is under a walloping debt of Rs. 35000 each.

He said that the bidding price of Steel Mill has been highly under evaluated, according to which the privatization Commission requisitioned a meeting on 31st March determined its maximum acceptable worth and sold it just like that. He also gave several other examples questioning the sale price, process of sale and integrity of privatization committee members.

Meanwhile the Anti Privatization Alliance, a coalition of political workers and trade unionists, staged a protest in front of the Supreme Court against the privatization of the Pakistan Steel Mills Protesters carried placards with slogans against the privatization policy of the government and the ongoing sale of the viable institutions of the state. The protesters said that the government should reverse the decision to privatize because it went against national interests.
