The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction has chosen Swedbank Stadium as the 2009 steel construction of the year. Rautaruukki was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of the steel structures for the stadium in Malmö, Sweden.

As per release “Ruukki was responsible for delivering and installing the wall and roof structures, as well as for project management. Work on building the stadium started in April 2007 and was completed in November 2008. The stadium can hold 24,000 spectators and is one of the largest in Sweden. The building comprises 58 trusses equivalent to 1,180 tonnes of steel beams. The outdoor measurements of the building are 150 x 200 meters.”

Another Ruukki delivery, an unusual lecture hall built at the University of Karlstad in Sweden, was also nominated for this year's award. The round, multimedia studio which is suspended from the ceiling, weighs 30 tonnes and can take 120 people. The lecture hall, which was completed in late 2008 has also been nominated for the ECCS Biannual European Steel Design Awards to be held in Barcelona in September 2009.

The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction gives an award every other year for an innovatively constructed, architecturally impressive steel structured building. Ruukki's challenge was to construct the impressive, technically complex structures cost-effectively.
