It is reported that, with General Motors planning a summer long shut down, some companies all over the United States that supply the auto industry are affected. It's an example of how the long the supply chain for the automotive industry really is. A big cut in production by Detroit will be felt all over including here in central Pennsylvania. Johnstown Wire Technologies has been in business since this plant was shut down by Bethlehem Steel back in 1992. That's why any significant cut in production by car makers is felt here in Johnstown.
The wires produced by the 250 people who work at Johnstown Wire Technologies are transformed into all sorts of the 2,100 fasteners that go into any new car that is manufactured. Because the automotive related business is responsible for about 35% of the total production of this plant , there is real concern about how any extended downturn in the auto business could affect operations here long term.
So far there have been no automotive related lay offs at Johnstown Wire Technologies. That's because this is a diversified operation and makes products for other industries as well. Still there is concern about the future for this, and any other businesses, that are dependent on the automobile manufacturing.
