SABMiller, the brewing giant and major Coke bottler, has said it has designed a new bottle crown that uses less steel, which will help it reduce its raw material costs in the face of rising prices for the metal.
The company's Peruvian subsidiary, Backus which runs two soft drink plants and five breweries, has developed in conjunction with Packaging Products Peru a low gauge bottle crown with the thickness of the steel at 0.17mm, well down on the industry standard of 0.22mm to 0.24mm.
