For the third time, SEAISI has organized a platform for experts from all over the world to exchange ideas and share information on new technologies and practices to achieve greener, cleaner and safer environment in the ASEAN steel industry. All together, 30 papers including country reports were presented over six sessions in the 2010 SEAISI Environmental and Safety Seminar held at Edsa Shangri La Hotel in Manila in Philippines. The two day seminar, which took place on November 22nd 2010 to November 23rd 2010, attracted a total of 90 delegates. There were many questions from the floor and discussions were lively during the Q&A sessions.

Mr Alberto Dalusung director of Global Green Power PLC Corporation delivered the first keynote speech on Renewable Energy in the Philippines. Delegates learnt how Philippines leverages on solar power and other renewable energy to replace oil based power generation.

The second keynote speaker, Mr Henk Reimink GM Safety, Technology and Environment from World Steel Association was there to share with the delegates on the efforts made by the association to get its members to make the steel industry a safer and healthier place to work. He also presented the result of the annual safety survey conducted by World Steel.

Many papers were presented on the technologies and mechanism to help the steel mills improve their environmental performance in their operations. Various development projects from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Luxemburg, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand were introduced. One of the highlights of the seminar was the presentation of four papers on emissions control from various companies. It was also the first time that TATA Steel (Thailand) presented papers on environment and safety and shared with the delegates how the company successfully improved environmental control and safety management to move to world class level. DuPont Sustainable Solutions, Singapore and NatSteel Holdings Pte Ltd., also shared many good practices on how to create and maintain an excellent safety culture in an organization.

After the seminar, delegates took the opportunity to visit two environmental friendly projects in the Philippines. The first was Sunpower Philippines Manufacturing Limited. The plant manufactures A300 cell, a clean, and efficient and world class power source which replaces electricity and oil base power generation. The presentation in the plant was very good. Delegates learnt a lot from the project and there were a lot of questions during the discussion. The next visit was to NUVALI, a real estate development of 1,840 hectares which is the first sustainably developed eco-community project in the Philippines. Delegates were shown a new life style concept, from the application of green architecture, waste recycling to renewable energy utilization.

All in all, it was a very successful seminar and the delegates brought back many good ideas for environmental improvement and safety management in their workplace.
