It is reported that SKF will set up the SKF University Technology Centre on Steels on the Cambridge University campus to research steels and heat treatment associated with advanced bearing technology.

As per report, SKF signed a 5 year contract with the Cambridge University Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, which will see academics helping underpin the company’s in house activities on steel and heat treatment.

The objective of the SKF University Centre on Steels is to rapidly advance SKF’s knowledge of the physical metallurgy of bearing steels leading to a range of new and improved products. SKF will identify and select a number of steel technology research and development topics for Cambridge University to work on that will lead to a better understanding of various issues.

The project will yield knowledge on how to manage detailed microstructure and exploit this expertise to enhance bearing properties. It will also help researchers understand how modifications to steel composition can enable complex operational demands to be mitigated and how to predict the performance relative to the steel and heat treatment selection.
