Three hundred schoolchildren from schools across London gathered at the Royal Institution for the Ironmongers' fourth Serious about Science charity event. Hosted by Ms Kate Bellingham, the science broadcaster and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics careers coordinator, the event was a mix of fascinating presentations and interactive workshops designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in science.
While Great Britain has a reputation for producing world class scientists and engineers, a declining proportion of British schoolchildren are choosing to study science at 'A' level or at university. The objective of Serious about Science is to help reverse this trend. Created by the Ironmongers' (Livery) Company and sponsored by Stemcor and Platts, the theme for this year's event was 'Speed, Space and Signals.'
Surrounded by 200 years of science history, the Royal Institution's famous Faraday Theatre was the perfect setting to engage and motivate young students. Science storyteller Mr Ian B Dunne entertained the audience with his wonders of science show. Hallidays Hydropower gave an inspiring talk about engineering careers in renewable energy. The Bloodhound SuperSonic Car land speed record team showed how leading edge science, maths and engineering are helping them to build a vehicle capable of exceeding 1,000 miles per hour. Paradigm satellite communications set Year 9 students the challenge of specifying and building a satellite model, while The Royal Corps of Signals involved Year 13 students in a series of tasks covering radio communication, mine detection and cyber security.
Mr Jonny Hudson master of the Ironmongers Company said that "Once again, Serious about Science was a resounding success and I thank our valued contributors and sponsors for supporting this great cause. It would be fantastic if more schoolchildren could benefit from our brilliant presenters and I urge further sponsors to come forward to help us broaden our reach in London and across the country."
