The contract signing follows the successful project award in August 2011 to the consortium comprising Scomi, CR Almeida SA Engenharia De Obras, Mendes Junior Trading E Engenharia SA and Serveng Civilsan SA Empresas Associadas De Engenharia. Under the consortium, Scomi's scope of works will involve the design and supply of rolling stock and depot equipment, supply of track switches, supply maintenance vehicle, system integration and project management.

Mr Hilmy Zaini Zainal country president of Scomi Brazil said that "With the Manaus project, we continue to further consolidate our position to provide innovative urban transport solutions in Brazil. The introduction of our monorail system to this historic city will improve the quality of life for thousands of residents by increasing mobility, reducing congestion, and benefiting the local economy as well as the environment."

He added that "Our investment in local manufacturing is a key component in our project delivery plan and essential for Scomi's long term commitment and participation in Brazil's fast expanding rail market."

Mr Kanesan Veluppillai president of Scomi International said that "We are honored to be entrusted with yet another large scale project which will showcase our technology and capabilities in monorail systems being implemented in Brazil. 2012 will be a significant year for us given that we are now managing sizeable and multi faceted urban transportation endeavors on an international scale across key markets like India, Brazil and Malaysia. After having delivered the monorail rakes last year, this year we will also begin operations of the first phase of the prestigious Mumbai Monorail, India’s first monorail project."

He added that "In the recent times, the Government of India has laid a lot of thrust on the development of urban transportation to keep pace with the ever increasing demand. Our expertise in offering end to end solutions in monorail systems and our competitive pricing has opened up a plethora of opportunities for us in India. In this New Year, as part of the ongoing strategic efforts of Scomi to establish and expand its business in new emerging and promising markets such as India, we are committed towards exploring all the new and promising opportunities in urban transportation projects that are expected to surge in major cities like Chennai and New Delhi in India."
