Reuters reported that Shaw Pipe Protection, owned by the energy services company ShawCor Limited, has notified United Steelworkers that operations at the Barlow Trail facility in Calgary would end effective July 30th 2010.

US Steelworkers' Union said that ShawCor is requesting workers to sign an agreement specifying terms of a severance, which would be drafted by the company. It added that the offer of a lump sum payment of CAD 150,000 for about 30 workers falls short of severance entitlements provided by Alberta's Labour Relations Code.
