Steel shipments dropped slightly in June in both US and Canada

Metals Service Center Institute has announced that steel shipments in June 2012 declined by roughly 2% YoY in the US and about 1% YoY in Canada from June 2011 levels.

US Service Center Activity
US Service Centers shipped 3,511,200 tons of steel products in June 2012. This represents a decrease of 1.9% YoY from June 2011. For YTD 2012, steel shipments were 22,089,200 tons, an increase of 5.9% YoY from the same period in 2011.

Steel product inventories were 9,020,300 tons at the end of June 2012, an increase of 13.6% YoY and a decrease of 0.7% MoM. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.6 months of supply in inventory, an increase of 15.9% from a year ago.

Canadian Service Center Activity
Canadian Service Centers shipped 531,200 tonnes of steel products in the month of June 2012. This represents a decrease of 0.8% YoY from June 2011. For YTD 2012, steel shipments were 3,303,400 tonnes, an increase of 2% YoY.

Steel product inventories were 1,602,800 tonnes at the end of June 2012, an increase of 2.8% YoY from June a year ago and a decrease of 2.6% MoM from last month. At the current shipping rate this represents 3.0 months of supply in inventory, an increase of 3.6% from a year ago.
