Port World reported that over 150 experts involved in the maritime sector gathered at the Sustainable Shipping awards in London to celebrate those companies making great strides to shape and improve the environmental legacy of shipping.
The event was opened by Mr José María Figueres, former President of Costa Rica and chairman of the Carbon War Room.
Mr Figueres spoke of the challenges faced by the industry, the efforts being made and the importance of the Sustainable Shipping awards. He said that "I feel privileged and honored to be here this evening. Your thought and leadership has begun to tilt the equation to a low carbon economy. I know there is no easy road, but there is no alternative either. I would like to not only thank and congratulate the companies receiving the awards but thank all of you for your determination."
Mr Andreas Chrysostomou chairman of the International Maritime Organization Marine Environment Committee then led the proceedings, acting as master of ceremonies. He added that "We have no time to waste. The major task in the future is to prevent ship generated pollution and the IMO can deliver on that. Shipping is the most efficient mode of transport. Why don't we also make it the most sustainable mode of transport."
The winners were decided by a group of internationally respected industry figures that included Dr Anne Marie Warris, environmental adviser at Lloyd's Register, Mr Arild B Iversen, president and CEO of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Mr Arthur Bowring MD of Hong Kong Shipowners Association, Mr Charlie Brown from IKEA, Mr Fred Pearce, environmental journalist, Mr Lars Robert Pedersen from BIMCO, Dr Simon Walmsley from the World Wildlife Fund and Ms Natalie Bruckner Menchelli, senior editor of SustainableShipping.com.

I am very pleased to accept this prestigious award that recognises the long term commitment of shipowners."
The Sustainable Shipping awards were the second awards of its kind held to recognize those people who have dedicated their time and money to helping shipping reduce its carbon footprint and to encourage others to get involved.
