Tenaris participated in a pilot project worth EUR 140 million, partly financed by the EU, which aims to redevelop the urban transport system along the Oslo Akershus axis in Norway, with a zero emissions fleet of five vehicles powered by hydrogen based fuel cells.
Tenaris supplied 10 large gas cylinders for storing high pressure hydrogen inside the service station, as well as another 10 on trailers to be used as a backup for the station.
Mr Stefano Capponi sales manager at Tenaris Gas Cylinders said that "The project's design features have required complex product development. This is mainly because of how hydrogen weakens steel over time and the high working pressures to which the material is subjected."
Tenaris worked with the customer to ensure the ideal chemistry, manufacturing a product with specifications to enhance the gas cylinder's performance.
Mr Italo Lesignoli project manager at Tenaris Gas Cylinders said that "Tenaris partnered in this important project with Air Liquide, with whom specifically qualified accessories were developed and supplied along with the large gas cylinders. Both companies are heavily involved at the forefront of developing technologies that support the use of hydrogen in the transport sector."
Akershus County Council, the Oslo City Council, the Norwegian Research Council and Transnova supported the project. In addition, the buses provided are part of a major European project called Clean Hydrogen in European Cities', which supports environmentally friendly transport systems in European cities.
