At the recent Consulting Engineers of Ontario Annual General Meeting & Awards Banquet, Tenova Goodfellow Inc was recipient of an Award of Excellence, receiving acclamation from Canadian Engineering peers for the installation and commissioning of their Slop Detection System (SDS) Technology on five (5) BOF vessels at (Riva Group) ILVA, Taranto, Italy.
Tenova Goodfellow’s Slop Detection System Technology uses lance vibration analysis with real-time alerts to give operators advance warning of the onset of a slop and a measurement of slop severity. The system is designed to provide direct feedback control of lance position and oxygen flow rate, for rapid mitigation of the effects of slop.
Accepting the award on behalf of TGI was Mr Vittorio Scipolo manager R&D said that “The SDS technology is one of four innovative modular solutions in Tenova’s comprehensive i BOF® Technology, offering BOF steelmakers great opportunity to reduce their costs and increase their competitiveness.”
For ILVA, Taranto, the SDS technology accurately provided early indication for 87% of the slopping heats observed. The automation of the lance flow and height resulted in increased productivity, improved yield as well as reductions in lost time associated with equipment cleanup and reduced atmospheric emissions.
