It is reported that state owned freight, transport and logistics giant Transnet Limited has celebrated a significant milestone in its ZAR 5.4 billion expansion of the Cape Town Container Terminal with the announcement of the completion of deepening and refurbishment work at Berth 602, the second of four berths to undergo such upgrades at the terminal.

The five year project, which will see the terminal’s capacity doubled to 1.4 million TEUs per annum, is part of a wide ranging upgrade to South Africa's logistic capabilities which also includes the expansion of capacity in the company's container terminals in Durban and the construction of the state of the art Ngqura Container Terminal in the Eastern Cape, as well as the purchase of hundreds of locomotives for its rail freight division.

The Cape Town Container Terminal has already taken delivery of new cranes which have substantially improved the ports handling and stacking capabilities.

Speaking at a ceremony attended by public enterprises minister Mr Malusi Gigaba, Mr Brian Molefe CEO of Transnet Group said that that "This project signifies our commitment to ensure the competitiveness of our economy as custodians of our transport and logistics infrastructure. The investment, which is part of our ZAR 110 billion rolling five-year capital investment program will not only increase capacity but go a long way towards improving productivity and efficiency at our ports."
