Scunthorpe Telegraph reported that UK Prime Minister Mr David Cameron has pledged to do all he can to reduce the impact of job losses at the TATA steelworks in Scunthorpe.
Mr Cameron last week met with the region's three MPs at Downing Street to discuss the future of North Lincolnshire's economy.
A Downing Street spokesman said that "The Prime Minister had a constructive meeting with North Lincolnshire MPs and the Chairman of the Business Innovation Skills Mr Taskforce John Clugston. The Prime Minister reiterated that any job losses are highly regrettable, and that the Government will work with them to look at ways to encourage investment in the area, and support the regional economy. As the Prime Minister has said, he was extremely disappointed by the job losses in Scunthorpe and spoke personally to Mr Ratan Tata about the decision."
As reported, 1,200 jobs are set to be lost at Scunthorpe's steelworks, although this total could be reduced to 750. MPs stressed that widespread redundancies would impact not just on individual steelworkers but on the wider North Lincolnshire economy.
