US weekly raw steel production down by 12pct YoY

American Iron & Steel Industries reported that, in the week ending October 17th 2009, domestic raw steel production was 1.473 million tons while the capability utilization rate was 61.7%. Production was 1.682 million tons in the week ending October 17th 2008, while the capability utilization then was 70.5%. The current week production represents a 12.4% YoY decrease from the same period in the previous year.

Production for the week ending October 17th 2009 is up by 1.9% WoW from the previous week ending October 10th 2009 when production was 1.446 million tons and the rate of capability utilization was 60.6%.

Adjusted YTD production through October 17th 2009 was 47.670 million tons, at a capability utilization rate of 48.2%. That is a 45.5% decrease from the 87.461 million tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 88%.

Broken down by districts, here's production for the week ending October 17th 2009:
1. Northeast Coast: 115
2. Pittsburgh/Youngstown: 92
3. Lake Erie: 47
4. Detroit: 59
5. Indiana/Chicago: 446
6. Midwest: 193
7. Southern: 461
8. Western: 60
