It is reported that Italy's Saipem SpA has completed the 210 kilometers MEDGAZ offshore pipeline link between Beni Saf on the Algerian coast and the Spanish coast of Almeria with the last weld. Saipem derrick laybarge Crawler completed the tie in 1.6 kilometers from the Beni Saf beach.

It may be noted that the main segments of the Mediterranean's first ultra deepwater pipeline had been laid earlier in 2008 by Saipem's lay vessels Castoro Sei and Saipem 7000. Construction has proceeded on schedule, with Castoro Sei laying the line in water depths up to 550 meters between March and June 2008 and Saipem 7000 laying the deepwater sections in waters as deep as 2,160 meters between August and November 2008.

Hydraulic tests will be performed in the first quarter 2009 to ensure that the pipeline is in good working order before its start up, which is scheduled for the second half of 2009.
