ABC reported that OneSteel said that closing its Whyalla plant in South Australia is among a range of options under consideration, but would be a last resort.
As per report, a review is taking place into the company's steel manufacturing division after it recorded AUD 185 million loss last financial year.
OneSteel said the financial situation is unsustainable and it is looking at a range of options to turn that around. The company will give more details at its annual general meeting in Sydney today.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union is seeking urgent talks with OneSteel.
Union official Mr Derek Winter said that workers are worried. He said “When the loss was announced earlier in the year, CEO also announced that there was going to be a review of all operations within OneSteel and obviously Whyalla steelworks was part of that review, so I wouldn't say it was a shock, but again when you start speculating and rumours start surfacing then obviously people get worried.”
