African Barrick Gold, a unit of the world's largest miner Barrick Gold Corporation has began construction of 14 kilometer security perimeter around its North Mara Gold Mine in Tanzania as the company steps up efforts to tighten security around the mine and curb attacks by its neighboring communities.

The company said that the Construction of the concrete wall is expected to be completed in early 2012. The mine has in the past experienced several attacks from its neighboring communities with an intention to steal gold ore. The mine has occasionally halted operations due to these attacks.

In 2008, the mine was attacked by over 200 people and destroyed property worth USD 7 million which forced the mine to suspend operations for nearly a month. The mine is one of the gold pits operated by Africa Barrick Gold and others include Bulyanhuru gold mine, Tuluwaka and Bwezugi gold mines. The mine produces around 210000 ounces of gold per year.

Africa Barrick has also installed CCTV cameras in sensitive areas at the mine. Africa Barrick Gold is Tanzania’s biggest gold producer and its produces around 700,000 ounces of gold annually from its four mines in the country. Tanzania is Africa’s fourth gold producer behind South Africa, Ghana and Mali.
