Aluminium International reported that with global demand for aluminium set to reach 70 MT by 2020, it looks like GCC producers will be boosting production capacity to 5Mmt by 2014 when the region will account for over 13% of the world's total production.

The GCC's expansion in terms of aluminium production has a lot to do with aggressive investments in the region in the form of new smelter development and the fact that operators in the area have easy access to low cost materials and are close to the main global markets of Europe, the USA and the Far East.

According to the Gulf Aluminium Council around 80% of primary aluminium produced in the region is exported around the world. The Gulf's aluminium investments are likely to top USD 55 billion by 2022 with USD 22 billion in the UAE, USD 7 billion in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and USD 5.7 billion in Qatar.

The Gulf aluminium industry will be discussed at Aluminium Middle East, formerly known as Aluminium Dubai. The venue is the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre and it all kicks off on April 23rd and runs until April 25th.
