BNamericas citing Mr Luis Castillo head of the national mining, metals and steelworkers federation FNTMMSP as saying that, workers from Lima based Doe Run Peru polymetallic smelter in La Oroya have not yet set a date for another march to demand the restart of operations at the facility.
Mr Castillo said the union organized a demonstration on Tuesday (Dec 28) that included local residents and authorities. The demonstration blocked traffic on the Carretera Central highway for approximately six hours. The highway is the main route connecting Peru central regions with Lima.
Local media reported that workers plan to hold another march in early January, Mr but Castillo said nothing has been organized yet.
Operations at the smelter were suspended last year when the company ran into financial difficulties as a result of the global economic crisis. Doe Run Peru is currently undergoing proceedings at competition regulator Indecopi which will result in creditors deciding to restructure or liquidate the firm.
La Oroya produced 11 different metals but mainly copper, zinc, lead and silver. Doe Run Peru is an affiliate of the New York based Renco Group.
