Freeport striking Cerro Verde miners to go on hunger strike
Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc’s striking Peruvian workers will begin a hunger strike after failing to reach an agreement with the company on higher wages.
Workers at Freeport’s Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde SAA, Peru’s third largest copper mine, walked off their jobs September 29th 2011. After meeting 10 times with Freeport McMoRan and failing to reach an agreement, the union decided to ask the Andean country’s Labor Ministry to propose a solution in the dispute.
