Hydro has announced that the Hydro Green Metal Award will be awarded for the improvement of climate footprint of aluminum production. The award is valued at USD 35,000 for which students researchers and others can compete.

Aluminum has various advantages such as being lightweight and has the potential of being used in energy efficient buildings and transportation. The material is also recyclable. Around 75% of aluminum produced ever since the inception of the industry is still being used.

The company has launched this award in collaboration with a Norwegian organization called Technoport which is involved in creating discussions between policymakers and science and business organizations. Individuals and organizations who succeed in providing a solution for a more energy efficient aluminum production method and identifying new applications for the material will be given this award.

The competitors will be judged by Prof Mark E Schlesinger from Missouri University of Science and Technology, Prof Arne Bredesen from NTNU, Norway, Prof. Jim Meston from University of Auckland and this team will be led by Mr Svein Richard Brandtzaeg president and CEO of Hydro.
