Metals Workers reported that Hydromet plans to become a global specialized metal recycler.

According to Hydromet, although it was impacted by the economic downturn, it has established a foundation as a well known metal recycler in Australia, recycling and processing lead, selenium, tellurium and precious metals.

Hydromet is currently the second largest used lead acid battery recycler in Australia after entering the market 3 years ago. The company said that it is now looking to further expand the lead business aiming to produce lead bullion as the finished product.

Hydromet said that it will implement a planned secondary lead smelting project at its Tomago facility, allowing it to maximize the return from lead recycling. It will also produce lead nitrate which is used in gold mining.

According to the company, it is also identifying other feed material besides lead acid batteries, such as old CRT and TV monitors. It has also identified other lead bearing feed sources containing precious metals, selenium and tellurium generated by base metal smelters.
