
Kennecott Utah Copper is idling less and doing more to protect its employees, the community and the environment as detailed in Kennecott Utah Copper’s 2010 Sustainable Development Report.
The interactive multi media report uses stories, videos and news articles to highlight Kennecott’s efforts to strengthen its operations and products while balancing social, environmental and economic factors. It also identifies commitments, company goals and encourages readers to provide feedback.

The report is designed to inform local communities and other interested stakeholders about Kennecott’s commitment to sustainable development and how its current actions and future plans contribute to short term and long term goals.
Highlights from the 2010 report include:
1. Kennecott employees and contractors achieved an all-time record low all injury frequency rate and worked 160 days without a lost time injury.
2. Kennecott received 14 safety awards from the Utah Safety Council for outstanding performance.
3. Kennecott received the Outstanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention Award from the Utah Pollution Prevention Association for efforts to reduce haul truck idling.
4. Rio Tinto approved USD 340 million investments to build a Molybdenum Autoclave Process facility which will provide economic benefits and utilize energy efficient technology.
5. Kennecott built a combined heat and power unit that will provide cleaner sources of energy for plant operations reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, and produce 6.2 MW of energy.
6. Kennecott contributed more than USD 5.3 million through corporate contributions and the Kennecott Utah Copper Visitor Center Charitable Foundation donated a record USD 186,000 to support 106 local charities through tax deductible entrance fees.
7. Kennecott commissioned a study in 2010 by the University of Utah’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research which showed that in 2009 the company directly employed 2,400 people and indirectly employed 14,800 people in Utah while contributing approximately USD 900 million in jobs, local taxes and purchases from about 1,000 Utah businesses.
8. Daybreak has continued to grow in residential and commercial development and broke ground on the new 208,000 square foot University of Utah Specialty Care Center, slated to open in 2011.
The reports also describes many other sustainable development efforts such as using recycled concrete and rebar to build the Brookside Bridge on 10400 South, determining the feasibility of using compressed natural gas vehicles, and restoring the Magna Concentrator site.
