AP reported that Kennecott Minerals Company as saying that it no longer needs federal authorization to build and operate a nickel and copper mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, so construction can begin soon.
A company spokeswoman said that Kennecott is withdrawing its application to the US Environmental Protection Agency for a groundwater discharge permit.
Kennecott said that it recently modified its water discharge system design in a way that removes the need for the permit. But the EPA official whose office has been processing the Kennecott application said that it's not clear whether the permit is still required. Geologist Mr Steve Roy said that the agency is reviewing the matter.
Ms Deb Muchmore spokeswoman said that Kennecott could start building the mine as soon as this spring.
