
Club of Mozambique reported that the Mozal aluminium foundry, which is responsible for a significant amount of Mozambique’s exports, was considered to be the country’s biggest company according to the list of the top 100 companies in Mozambique in 2009 published by consulting company KPMG.
The prize for the best company was awarded to transport firm Mozline, after oil and Gas Company Companhia Moçambicana de Hidrocarbonetos won it the previous year. Mozline posted growth in turnover of 55.66% against 2008.
Mozal posted turnover of over 26.259 billion meticals in 2009 whilst the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric dam which was ranked second in the list with turnover of 8,5 billion meticals. Of the top ten places only Mozal and Electricidade de Moçambique are in the same positions as last year with the latter remaining in sixth place.
The changes that are worthy of note are HCB which rose to second place, after being ranked fourth the previous year, Millennium bim which rose 2 places, Mozambique Leaf Tobacco rose three places and BP Moçambique, which fell five places and was ranked tenth.
