
Metal Workers cited Mr Kent Duston from Autonomic Consulting As saying that Kiwi tax payers will pay an equivalent of NZD 225,000 for each job at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter.
Specialist carbon market information service Carbon News reported Mr Duston made his calculations based on the free carbon credits being provided to Rio Tinto.
Mr Nick Smith New Zealand’s Climate Change Issues Minister announced that the government would protect Rio Tinto from carbon and electricity charges arising from the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter.
New Zealand government claimed the subsidies would protect jobs, but Mr Duston said that these jobs would come at a cost.
